Dynamic QR codes and editing destinations
How dynamic codes work, how to change a destination after printing, and what happens when a code is paused.
A dynamic QR code can be edited after it is printed. Open the code, change the destination URL on the Destination tab, and save. The same printed code starts sending scanners to the new place immediately.
How does a dynamic code work?
The image encodes a short link on qraffic.com, in the form /r/ followed by a short slug. When someone scans it, our server looks up the code and answers with a temporary redirect (HTTP 302) to your destination. Responses are marked no-store so browsers do not remember an old destination. The scan is recorded after the redirect is sent, so counting does not slow the visitor down.
The slug is generated for you, seven characters long, using letters and digits that are hard to confuse with each other. You can choose your own slug when you create a code. A custom slug is 3 to 32 characters, using letters, digits, hyphens, and underscores. The slug cannot be changed after creation, because it is what the printed image contains.
How do I change where a code points?
- Open the QR codes page and select the code.
- Go to the Destination tab.
- Edit the Destination URL.
- Choose Save changes.
On the same tab you can rename the code and change its status.
What do Active, Paused, and Archived mean?
Only Active dynamic codes redirect. A paused or archived code shows a page that reads "This QR link isn't active", with a note that the code may have been paused or removed. Pausing is a safe way to switch a campaign off without losing its settings or analytics. You can switch the status back to Active at any time. The code list also has a Pause action on each card.
Deleting a code asks for confirmation first. Prefer pausing or archiving if you might want the history later.
Do tracking parameters carry through?
Yes. If the scanned link carries utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, or utm_content, those values are added to your destination. If your destination already has its own value for one of them, yours is kept.
What is the limit on dynamic codes?
Each plan has a cap on dynamic codes. When you reach it, creating another shows "Your plan allows N dynamic QR codes. Upgrade for more." Existing codes keep working. The caps by plan are listed in plans and billing.
Can I label and group codes?
Yes. A code can carry up to 20 tags. Exporting your list to CSV includes name, slug, short link, kind, destination, status, total scans, and creation date.
